Challenge

Ericsson is a global leader in delivering Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions to service providers, empowering them to leverage the full potential of connectivity by offering innovative and scalable technology and services that are easy to use, adapt, and scale, making its customers successful in a fully connected world. Ericsson sought to leverage the radio spectrum auction in NZ to deploy new mobile network models (3G, 4G), attracting new entrants into the NZ mobile telecommunication market to choose Ericsson when designing their competitive entry strategy.

Strategy

TSC Global has a deep knowledge of the NZ spectrum market, as it has advised the government and several mobile operators on various aspects of radio spectrum management. This expertise helped Ericsson to enter the market with an open-source mobile network solution. TSC Global worked with Ericsson and BCL, the state-owned broadcasting corporation, to develop a strategy that addressed the needs and interests of the telco operators, the regulators, and the policy makers. TSC Global also helped Ericsson and BCL to evaluate different options, build business cases based on the NZ telecommunication characteristics, and identify potential partners for Ericsson.

Transformation

The Open Access model revolutionized the ICT sector by allowing any ICT provider to use an open network on a fair and equal basis (separating service provision from the network). This prevented wasteful network duplication, improved network efficiency and reduced unit costs.
